Free photography book for Kindle until Sunday."How to Create Stunning Digital Photography" by Tony Northrup. I ran across this today and it's free until Sunday. I have no idea if the book is any good or not as I just downloaded it, but it got 4.5 stars on 11 reviews. Check it out if you have a chance! http://www.amazon.com/Tony-Northrups-DSLR-Book-ebook/dp/B006KY2VZ2/ref=pd_sim_kstore_3?t=slicinc-20&tag=slicinc-20&ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2

Venice Window
What can you say about Venice? One of the most amazing cities in the world. So much history, and so different from almost every other city in the world. It's vibrant yet tranquil, rugged yet gentle, colorful yet subtle. And, almost everywhere, any time of the year, you'll find windows with flowers.
Most photos of Venice seem to focus on the canals and gondoliers, but to me, the historic buildings, and the people within and about, are what really gives the city its character.

Fat Tire
Now here's one cool mode of transportation – literally. Crested Butte, CO is primarily a ski town in the winter, but the locals seem to prefer bicycles. On powder days, I suspect other modes of transportation were in greater use, but the old bicycles covered in snow still make an interesting composition!

More powder, and still more
We've really struck the powder jackpot here in Crested Butte. After the first two bluebird days of skiing on slightly crusty but well-groomed snow, we had a huge snowstorm, and the snow has continued daily since then. We had 11" as of Wednesday morning, another 5" by Thursday morning, and yet another 8" last night – and more still in the forecast!
This has made for some of the most excellent skiing conditions I've ever enjoyed, as well as occasionally some of the most challenging. For example, yesterday we went up on the mountain and it was so snowy and blowy, you could hardly see where you were going. But the day before, we had a bluebird powder day. go figure.
Yesterday, I had an adventure that may have me changing my name to something perhaps a little more indicative of my Polish ancestry – "Michael Oneski." Cruising down a powder trail in the driving snow, I took a tumble and lost one of my skis. I mean, really lost it. It took me over half an hour to find it in the deep powder, and I was almost ready to accept a ride down with the ski patrol, when finally I located it, under about a foot and a half of powder.
All's well that ends well! We're headed out shortly for our final day of skiing fun, and then tomorrow we journey homeward.

Mt. Crested Butte
Today we spent our first day skiing this beautiful mountain! Mt. Crested Butte rises 12,162 feet into the air, and even from the top of this highest lifts on the mountain, the peak still towers majestically above. We had a good day on the slopes, a bluebird day if you will, although I would have liked a bit more fresh snow. Not to worry, that seems to be in store over the next few days.
Conditions today were good but the powder was a bit crusted over, leading us to start referring to the mountain as "Crusted Butte." Still, we had a very enjoyable day!
For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you've seen that I am trying a new iPhone app called "Ski Tracks." So far, I have to give this app two thumbs up! It's a GPS driven app that records my wanderings all over the mountain, and reports with statistics, graphs and maps – and one-click Facebook publishing. Really nice, and I'll be posting more about it later.
That's all for now, it's time for rest! More to come…

Just another day? Not!
I travel quite a bit in my line of work, but today, I'm traveling with a different purpose: fun. I'm on vacation! I'm headed off to the mountains of Colorado for a week of skiing. I'm really looking forward to it, not only as a rest from the daily grind, but also as a chance to enjoy some exciting winter sports, to commune with Nature in a beautiful setting, and to recharge my creative batteries. Keep an eye out here for images and words to come over the next week!
My journey today takes me from my home in Saint Petersburg, FL, through Denver and onward to Gunnison, Colorado – where I'll catch a ride onward to Crested Butte, a ski resort I've never visited. The base elevation there is 9375' above sea level, so I'm sure I'll be feeling the effects of the altitude – I'll be drinking a lot of water to stay hydrated the first 24-48 hours.
In traveling to the airport today, I found myself excited but calm. In years gone by, heading out on a plane flight would be an adventure in itself – checking my flight arrangements, making sure I had my travel documents, packing, checking in and so forth. But, I do that so much anymore, the airport experience to me is now second nature. I found it odd today that I didn't have that travel apprehension that you might expect when heading out on a long journey. Instead, I'm just filled with that feeling of "Are we there yet? I wanna be there!" It's nice to be able to live in the moment for once and not have to worry about the distractions of the travel itself. That's a small reward of my life as a road warrior.
So, I find myself in my plane seat, en route to Denver as I write this. A week of excitement lies ahead, and by this time tomorrow, I plan to be "dancing with the mountain." Oh, and of course I've brought my good camera! I have some ideas for photographic experimentation this week, and I'll be sure to post some of the results here. Stay tuned.

The Light From Within
I'm always on the lookout for unique views and unusual photo opportunities, and this one jumped out at me – not every day do you see a torchiere in a stone foyer with open windows! And, at dusk, the orange glow of the lamp lent a nice warm glow to the interior of the stone building.
In this composition, I've quite literally tossed the rule of thirds out the window, but I like the way it looks. I hope you do, too!
